In Sanskrit, there's a poem about hand gestures: 'Yato hasta stato drishti'.' Where the hand is, the eyes follow' 'Yato drishti stato manaha'.' Where the eyes go, the mind follows'.
Shiro, Drishti & Greeva Bhedhas & Anga
The following describes the different shiro (head), drishti (eye) & greeva (neck) bhedhas (movements) and the categorisation of anga (body) that are used in Bharathanatyam.
Shiro Bhedha – head movements
Shira or shirasa means ”head” in sanskrit. The 9 head movements refer to the head positions when expressing a particular bhava.
- Samam: Keep head straight
- Udvahitam: Look up
- Adhomukham: Look Down
- Alolitam: Move head in a circular movement
- Dhutam: Move head to right and left
- Kampitam: Nod head up and down
- Paravrittam: Turn head to the right or left briskly
- Ukshiptam: Head is turned and raised or in a slanted position
- Parivahittam: Small shakes of the head done quickly

Drishti Bhedha – eye movements
Drishti means ”eyes” in sanskrit. The 8 eye movements refer to the eye positions when expressing a particular bhava.
- Samam: Keep eyes still
- Alokitam: Roll eye balls in a circular pattern
- Saachi: Look through the corner of the eyes
- Pralokitam: Move your eyes side to side.
- Nimilitam: It looks like a half shut eye, try to focus the eye ball towards the heart
- Ullokitam: Look upwards
- Anuvrittam: Move eyes up and down rapidly
- Avalokitam: Look down

Greeva Bhedha – neck movements

~ padasana is a standing yoga pose in which the practitioner roots one leg and, while balancing, holds the other leg out in front of the body in a fully extended position.

Urdhva ~sana is most often done as part of the Sun Salutation sequence. As such, it sometimes gets short shrift. You may stay in the pose for less than one breath during a vinyasa flow, but it's worthwhile to take the time on your own to explore its benefits more fully.

What is Utthita ~ Padangusthasana?
In Sanskrit language the word Utthita means extended, ~ means hand, pada means foot and padangustha means thumb or toe. From the literal meanings of these words this asana can be described as Extended Hand-Toe Posture.
In Parsva Utthita ~ Padangusthasana (with your leg to the side), pay close attention to leveling your hips. Feel your raised thigh roll outward as much as possible and your abdomen (your navel) move away from that raised thigh.
How to do Standing Forward Bend (~padasana)
Stand straight with feet together and arms alongside the body.
Balance your weight equally on both feet.
Breathing in, extend your arms overhead.
Breathing out, bend forward and down towards the feet.

A variation of the Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana), the Hands to Feet Pose (Pada ~sana) improves flexibility of your spine, strengthens your legs, enhances digestion, and aids in blood circulation in your head.

Stand erect. Keep both the legs touching each other. Take a deep breath and keep both the hands up. Now go on exhaling. Bend in the front. Place both the hands on the ground on both the sides of the legs. Touch the head on the knees. Do not bend the knees. Hold the breath outside.

(I was fact-checking outside of class.) I grew tired of the Sanskrit. (I was sure my target students would relate to 'hand to big toe' instead of 'utthita ~ padangusthasana.') I ran out of outfits. I knew my path to peace and ahimsa was to roll up my mat and exit my teacher aspirations.
